For the ISEE you will recieve several scores on your student report: a scaled score, a raw score, a percentile ranking, and a stanine score.
Scaled Scores:After reaching the raw score for each section scores are converted to a scaled score. For each of the three sections (Mathematics, Reading, and Verbal) you will receive a scaled score from 760 to 940. The scaled score is based on a raw score, which is in turn determined by the number of correct and wrong answers. The scaled score varies by test level for example the Middle Level has scaled scores from 782 - 926. The essay will not be graded but will be sent to your schools.
Raw scores:
Raw scores are the calculation of your right answers (+1 point) and wrong or omitted answers (+0 points). So, if of the 160 questions, a student answered 100 questions correctly, answered 20 questions incorrectly, and omitted 40 questions, they would receive a raw score of 100.
Percentiles:
The percentile shows the percentage of students who scored lower than your score. You will receive a percentile rank in each of three sections and for your total scale score. Percentiles only compare you to other students of the same grade and gender who have taken the ISEE in the past 3 years.
Stanine:
A stanine score is another way to report a percentile. The stanine reduces the ranking levels to 9 and reports students comparitively.
Percentile Rank | Stanine | Description |
1-3 | 1 | Below Average |
4-10 | 2 | Below Average |
11-22 | 3 | Below Average |
23-39 | 4 | Average |
40-59 | 5 | Average |
60-76 | 6 | Average |
77-88 | 7 | Above Average |
89-95 | 8 | Above Average |
96-99 | 9 | Above Average |
